SUMMARY:Entomology E Paul Catts Annual Lecture
DESCRIPTION:The E Paul Catts Lecture series is an annual event hosted by the WSU Entomology department\, featuring a prominent scientist who studies major issues of concern to society. This year our featured speaker is Dr. Elizabeth Borer\, Regents Professor at the University of Minnesota. Elizabeth’s talk will cover one of the biggest current challenges in ecology\, which is to understand how biodiversity and ecosystem functioning are affected by changes in climate\, nutrient cycles\, and species distributions. To effectively plan for conservation\, restoration\, and ecosystem management\, we need strong scientific data to predict when and how these global changes will impact biodiversity and the services provided by ecosystems. Elizabeth will share her experience in developing and leading the Nutrient Network\, a global collaboration of identically replicated grassland experiments. This network is providing unique insights into how ecosystems respond to global changes like increased nitrogen and changing climate. In her talk\, she will highlight key findings on how these factors interact to shape biodiversity and ecosystem processes in grasslands around the world.

SUMMARY:27th Annual Garden Tour/Plant Sale
DESCRIPTION:Tour Historic And Heavenly Harbor Gardens On July 19. \n\n\n\nThe 27th annual Master Gardener Garden Tour & Plant Sale features four unique gardens in Hoquiam including the former estate of one of the one of Grays Harbor’s famed pioneer and business families. The tour from 10:00am to 4:00 pm also includes the Burton C. Ross Memorial Rose Garden at the Polson Museum. In addition\, Master Gardeners host a big plant sale from 9:00am to 5:00pm at 2618 Sumner Avenue in Hoquiam. \n\n\n\nGardens vary in size and personality. One is a hundred years old\, spanning six acres\, and features a formal design and hard-scaping\, themed garden rooms\, a private forest\, and is currently under renovation by new young owners. Just around the corner is a city lot-sized garden that this gardener transformed in a mere ten years from an ordinary grass yard into a lush oasis with multi-layers of trees\, shrubs\, and perennials. A third garden with striking curb appeal makes room for a vegetable garden and greenhouse with more beauty to explore behind the garden gate. A short way north on Hwy. 101\, right on the bank of the Little Hoquiam River\, is a two-acre garden delight that showcases a stunning collection of Japanese maples\, ponds\, winding arbors\, slate paths\, and a magnificent glass and iron greenhouse. \n\n\n\nWSU Master Gardeners will be on hand in every garden to answer any and all gardening questions\, along with many of the garden owners themselves. \n\n\n\nTickets are on sale at Harbor Drug and Gifts in Hoquiam\, Marshall’s Garden & Pet in Aberdeen\, Dennis Company in Elma and Raymond\, Valu Drug in Montesano\, Westport Winery in Aberdeen\, Galway Bay Gift Shop\, and Jip and Gwenner’s Pet in Ocean Shores.
