SUMMARY:50th year of the WSU Extension Master Gardener Program Celebration Event
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the final regional event celebrating the 50th year of the WSU Extension Master Gardener Program and learn about our partnership with faculty and staff at Northwestern Washington Research and Extension Center (NWREC). \n\n\n\nOur short program will recognize long-time master gardeners and their partners within the communities of Clallam\, Jefferson\, King\, Island\, San Juan\, Skagit\, Snohomish and Whatcom counties. \n\n\n\nSpecial guests will help us celebrate the many volunteers who have made our program successful. The research center and the three demonstration gardens on site – MG Discovery Garden\, NW Fruit Garden\, and Salal Native Plant Society Garden – will be open for tours.

DESCRIPTION:SoilCon Field Day\, July 27th\, 2023\, Mount Vernon NWREC Press Release \n\n\n\nTaking Principles to Practice: SoilCon Field Day \n\n\n\nThe Washington Soil Health Initiative (WaSHI) and WSU’s Center for Sustaining Agriculture and Natural Resources are excited to announce SoilCon Field Day 2023! With three years of virtual SoilCon education\, it’s time to get out in the field and learn through experience. \n\n\n\nJoin us for: \n\n\n\nA tour of the first WaSHI Long-Term Agroecological Research Experiment site\, with insight from NWREC researchers on the importance of addressing long-term considerations in soil health. \n\n\n\nTutorials in soil sampling\, the range of soil health metrics\, and a visualization with a rainfall simulator. \n\n\n\nDemonstrations on biochar and no-till drills. \n\n\n\nDiscussions on the significance of cover cropping and compost usage on soil health\, as well as the current status of the Washington Soil Health Initiative. \n\n\n\nSoilCon Field Day will be held from 12:00-4:00 pm on July 27th\, 2023 at Mount Vernon Northwestern Washington Research and Extension Center. The Skagit County WSU Master Gardeners Discovery Garden\, The Western Washington Fruit Research Foundation\, and the Salal Native Plant Garden welcome you… \n\n\n\nThe three gardens are co-located on the grounds of Washington State University (WSU) Northwestern Washington Research and Extension Center (NWREC) in Mount Vernon\, WA. \n\n\n\nSkagit County WSU Extension Master Gardener Discovery Garden features 30 themed garden rooms on 1.5 acres with ADA accessible paths and educational displays. \n\n\n\nWestern Washington Fruit Research Foundation (NW Fruit) has 6 acres of fruit trees and berries suited for our climate with informative signage and espaliers. Tour the Antique Apple Collection in the orchard’s inner oval or Tour the entire orchard. Ask about pruning and thinning fruit. \n\n\n\nSalal Native Plant Garden is a half-acre oasis of native plants in a shady natural habitat. Docents available for tours and to answer questions. \n\n\n\nTalk with the volunteers who maintain the gardens to learn more about the gardens and gardening. See plants chosen to perform well in the Pacific Northwest.
